German title: EIN PROPHET
Malik El Djebena, half Arab, half Corsican, is 19 years old and can neither read nor write. He is sentenced to six years in prison. When he arrives in prison all alone, he appears younger and more fragile than the other prisoners. Cornered by the leader of the Corsican gang that currently rules the prison, he is given a series of "assignments" that toughen him up and earn him the gang leader's trust. Malik learns quickly and rises through the prison hierarchy while secretly plotting his own schemes.
A Prophet was awarded the Grand Jury Prize in Cannes in 2009. The film brought the then 27-year-old Tahar Rahim to fame.
