In the organizer's words:
How does text come into motion? How is performative language created that merges sign language poetry and spoken language poetry into a fluid work of art? The literature initiative handverlesen provides answers with its project - "Fluide Glossare", a chain poem in German spoken and sign language that brings together the queer worlds of deaf and hearing people.
What does queer language look like? How do concepts of queer life realities change between deaf and hearing individuals? How do new signs form for new terms? Four queer artists have taken the format of the glossary as a starting point to poetically explore questions about the origin of terms, their power of interpretation and their life of their own.
Anna Julian Mendlik, Biba Oskar Nass, Jon Savkin and Ela Beysun are jointly developing a bilingual performance in which new constellations of text, body and language are created.
For the finale of this year's unruly readings, the audience can expect a comprehensive insight into the work of handverlesen: In addition to the performance of "Fluide Glossare", a visual exhibition of other handverlesen projects and sign language poetry films will be shown. A culinary intervention will create space for an exchange about the works on display.
About the artists
Anna Julian Mendlik, author, hearing. Her most recent publications are Pandoras Playbox (Verlagshaus Berlin 2022) and Schaum (Sukultur 2022). Her work has received several awards, including the Basel Poetry Prize. She was a fellow at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, in Olevano, Italy, and Stadtschreiber:in in Tübingen, among others. In 2024, she curated the festival Coming Out, Inviting In at the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin. She currently runs a poetry workshop at the Haus für Poesie. She has been involved in the project handverlesen since 2017.
Biba Oskar Nass, transboy & word butcher, hearing, writes prose and poetry as a freelance artist. In his texts, he deals with queer life and the effects of violence. Biba Oskar Nass is also an editor and publishes the queer literary magazine Transcodiert, among other texts. Biba Oskar Nass curated the event series Let's talk about class at ACUD macht in 2022.
Jon Savkin, born in Munich in 1996, lives in Berlin. Jon Savkin is a sign language poet, dancer and actor. His artistic development began through his collaboration with Kassandra Wedel. In 2023 Jon Savkin took part in Hamlet at the German Deaf Theater. As a sign language poet, Savkin was involved in Shut up and Sign Speak (2022) and TextKörper-KörperText (2021), among others.
Ela Beysun is a Berlin-based sign language poet, performer and actor. In 2022, Ela Beysun was awarded the DEGETH Audience Award as a member of the performance group T.A.S. Ela Beysun performed at the Vi-Fest 2022 with the sign language poems Feminism and Bodyshaming and was part of the ensemble of the Deutsches Gehörlosen Theater in 2023, where she took part in the production of Hamlet (2023).

Franziska Winkler is an author and curator who deals with transmedial literary translations and their border crossings. As the daughter of deaf parents, her literary work moves between several language worlds and always includes sign language as her first language. In 2017, she founded the literary initiative handverlesen together with Katharina Mevissen. She is the editor of the anthology handverlesen - Gebärdensprachpoesie in Lautsprache (hochroth Verlag Munich, 2023), which was awarded the Dörlemann ZuSatz Prize. In 2022-2023 she was a resident artist at Burg Hülshoff - Center for Literature. With her novel project Schlucken (working title), she was a fellow of the Autor:innenwerkstatt Prosa of the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin and the Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen in 2024. Her artistic interests lie in the literary boundaries between languages, media and bodies.
