Between landscape depictions and the construction of the gaze: As part of the Biennale de la Photographie de Mulhouse 2026, the French-Portuguese artist Manuela Marques is exhibiting her impressive works at the CCFF!
Manuela Marques' artistic work is part of a contemporary exploration of landscape representation and the construction of the gaze upon it. It develops from unique environments that are seen as veritable places of exploration and research. Each place examined becomes a space of exploration in which different levels of perception intersect and overlap. Historical, geographical and scientific data enter into a dialog with a sensitive and experimental approach. This approach unfolds in photographic works, videos, sound pieces and installations that are conceived as dispositives of observation and experience.
Her practice is based on the development of on-site working protocols and strategies of attention that question the modalities of perception and appropriation of the territory. By staging the elements collected on site, Manuela Marques designs an "other nature" that can be understood as a theater of the landscape, in which the real is analyzed, shifted and reinterpreted. Each area is thus seen as a carrier of specific forms, rhythms and narratives that reveal invisible layers. The latter are to be made visible through her work.
Manuela Marques, born in Portugal, lives and works in both France and Portugal. She is represented by Galerie Anne Barrault (Paris) and Rui Freire Fine Arts (Lisbon). In her work, which moves in the field of photography and video, she explores the relationships between materiality and immateriality, between the visible and the invisible, and between perception and representation. Based on everyday objects and elements from nature, she creates images that question the modalities of the gaze and interpretation, placing presence and absence, light and shadow as well as form and indeterminacy in tension with one another.
