Painting is generally two-dimensional, its place of appearance is the picture surface. The painterly surface, physically an impermeable boundary layer, proves to be optically permeable in many respects. The Renaissance theorist Leon Battista Alberti famously compared the picture to an open window that allows a view of the world beyond. Even today, when painting has turned to abstraction and flatness, i.e. the flatness of the picture, has come more into focus, the question of the space behind the surface of the picture is at the center of various painterly strategies.
