VORTRAG | Mikroplastik im Rhein

The Rhine is more contaminated with microplastics than almost any other river. According to estimates, 10 tons of it are transported in the Rhine towards the North Sea every year. This is the highest concentration measured in an inland body of water worldwide. Microplastics in the Rhine represent a growing and worrying problem that not only affects life in the river, but also increasingly affects human health. The Natural History Museum of the Benrath Palace and Park Foundation is a partner of the Interregio project "The Rhine connects" and will be showing the exhibition "The great journey of small plastic" in 2026! Visitors will learn where microplastics come from - industrial wastewater, car tire abrasion, laundry made from synthetic fibers and packaging waste - and how attempts are being made to solve the problem.
