Camille Claudel - sculptor and woman
Camille Claudel is inextricably linked with the name of Rodin, whose pupil and lover she was for 13 years. Would she have been THE Camille today if HIM had not existed? Why did she have to spend 30 years of her life in the closed asylum in Montdevergues? Was it an individual psychiatric problem or rather the problem of a narrow-minded patriarchal society that could not tolerate unusual, creative women?

Press
"Sibylle Dordel (...) knew how to put Camille Claudel on stage with economical gestures and expressive facial expressions. She portrayed the creative artist as well as the lonely sick woman fighting for emotional survival. With '... a god who lets an innocent woman die in a madhouse', Claudel speaks from her mouth. (...) a magnificent acting performance."
Rhein-Neckar Zeitung
Sibylle Dordel,
worked a lot about women who found it difficult to hold their own alongside their male partners (F. Kahlo, C. Schumann). Her current focus is on the question of guilt. In 2024, she played the mute double of the former guard Lisa in the Auschwitz opera 'The Passenger' (Weinberg) in Munich.
The (English) press wrote:
"Sibylle M. Dordel's portrayal of the 'old Lisa' is rightly praised for its quiet power. She manages to convey a rare emotional intensity through the precision of her gestures and the expressiveness of her body alone. Her performance perfectly illustrates how stage presence can transcend the text and become the heart of a work, making every movement 'heartbreaking' for the audience."
Revival: April/May 2026 de Nationale Opera Amsterdam
