The student orchestra Junge Kammerphilharmonie Sachsen and the male chamber choir ffortissibros bring works by important Czech composers to the stage of the Gewandhaus.
It is 80 years since Czechoslovakia was liberated from the German invaders by Soviet troops in May 1945. In the same year, the resistance cantata "Neustupujte!" by Miloslav Kabeláč was premiered on October 28, the Czech national holiday. The occasion for the premiere was the election of the first president after the occupation by Nazi Germany, Edvard Beneš.
Now the eponymous work "Weichet Nicht!" for male choir and orchestra is to be performed again to mark the 80th anniversary, together with other resistance compositions by Kabeláč and works by the important Czech composers Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana and Josef Suk.
Miloslav Kabeláč wrote several works during the Nazi era as resistance against the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, which the Germans had proclaimed over Czechoslovakia. Kabeláč rarely received adequate attention as a composer of his time, mainly due to the repression he experienced at the hands of the National Socialists and later the Communist regime. It is only in recent years that his life's work has been brought back to the attention of the music world.
