The term 5th dimension alone leaves plenty of room for interpretation. It can be interpreted physically, geometrically or spiritually. At first glance, the reason for the title of this album is comparatively banal: Many of the harmonies on 5th Dimension have a third-octave relationship and the third, in turn, is the 5th overtone. The circle of fifths, based on the 3rd overtone, is much more familiar - but only one step below. This is certainly not a new insight and will not knock many people's socks off.
At second glance, however, it reveals a dusty truth, the value of which receives surprisingly little attention today. When I began to study harmonics more intensively, I got answers to questions that became more and more pressing: Why do certain harmonies exist at all? Why do certain scales work? I knew the rules, but much of it was lifeless knowledge. By exploring overtones, I found explanations that are not only based on the physical reality of our universe, but above all can be experienced directly - a reality that is both simple and endlessly beautiful. This has also shaped my self-image as an artist. My task is to make this simple beauty audible - and I'm still a beginner at that. Ironically, many of the harmonies and rhythms are not so simple in terms of music theory. But I am firmly convinced that we all have the direct experience of music within us and can grasp many things intuitively by listening attentively. Dry theory, on the other hand, often makes the approach seem more abstract than it actually is. 5th Dimension was created over a long period of time. It's not the kind of album where you write a few tunes, get your favorite colleagues together, maybe play a little tour and then go into the studio - which can also be very cool!
Instead, we met up irregularly for more than two years and worked on the material - usually without a gig in sight. I can't thank Christoph, Conrad, Daniel and Vincent enough for this collaborative process, which allowed me to reflect on the pieces in peace and depth. At the same time, you can hear real, collective jazz improvisation: We recorded everything together, without any subsequent overdubs. That alone is not a quality criterion and in the editing process we also combined two complete takes for some pieces. For me, however, the decisive factor is the documented connection between the intensive creation process and the sudden, joint drop in the moment. 5th Dimension is a logical successor to Just a Glimpse, even if that was never my intention. While my debut seems more like a brief snapshot in retrospect, this album is more mature in many respects. And yet it could not have come about without the experiences from Just a Glimpse - as the first step on a path whose direction was not yet clear to me at the time. Ultimately, however, 5th Dimension is certainly not primarily about overtone series and the harmonies that derive from them. Rather, I hope that it reminds us of the beauty that surrounds us omnipresently and in which we are all connected. A beauty that belongs to no one and yet to all - Trust it. Moving through us.
