Xochiyaoyotl

In the organizer's words:

In a world where gods were nourished by humans, a child is trained to fight in war and preserve the sun god with his life. "Xochiyaoyotl" - which translates as "flower wars" - is reminiscent of the rituals of Aztec martial arts practices that were wiped out by the Spanish conquest. We can only imagine what this fighting technique looked like, with which the belief in tomorrow was challenged anew every night. David Camargo, Amauta García and Maximiliano Soto Mayorga develop a music theater between myth and memory, in which music, space and performance emerge from the presence of musical bodies in fighting poses.

"Xochiyaoyotl" is the winning project of the Munich Biennale's OPEN CALLS on the theme of "Martial Arts". The production was selected from 85 submissions by an international jury consisting of Carola Bauckholt, Kenny Savelson, Vigdís Jakobsdóttir, Martin Minarik, Sarah Maria Sun, Óscar Escudero and Toshiki Okada.
