Lecture by Olaf Obsommer
Olaf Obsommer reports on two adventures that could hardly be more contrasting. On the one hand, he accompanied the superstars of the extreme kayak whitewater scene - Dane Jackson (USA), Bren Orton (ENG), Adrian Mattern (GER) and Kalob Grady (CAN) - deep into the jungles of Gabon. He also talks about a sea kayaking adventure around the island of Crete in Greece.
WHITEWATER EXPEDITION GABON
The Ivindo River stretches from the north-east of Gabon to the south-west and flows through one of the wildest and most beautiful rainforest regions in Africa. It is home to some of the largest waterfalls in Central Africa, which are up to 50 meters high. The river crosses the UNESCO Ivindo National Park, an area full of exotic flora and fauna, rare birds and mammals. The aim of the expedition was to explore as many of these labyrinthine waterfalls as possible on different channels - a story of passion, great sport and team spirit.
SEA KAYAK ADVENTURE CRETE
The sea around Crete always presents new challenges: Poseidon's moods are unpredictable. Calm, glittering waves that reflect the sun can suddenly turn into strong winds and high waves that challenge the strength and skill of the kayakers.
kayakers. But the effort is worth it: after each difficult passage, a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean, the bright blue sky and the deep green olive groves of Crete opens up. Welcome to sea kayaking paradise.
