Stadtgarten Köln has its origins in 1898, when the park restaurant was opened in Cologne's oldest inner-city green space. After many decades of changing management structures, the site was transferred to the Kölner Jazz Haus e. V. initiative in 1985 - an association of musicians who wanted to create a place for contemporary, improvised music. In the same year, Stadtgarten Restaurant Betriebs GmbH was founded, which took over the renovated restaurant and financed the concert program with its lease payments. The modern era of the Stadtgarten Köln began with the opening of the concert hall in 1986, which quickly made the venue a permanent fixture on the music scene.
