In this edition of Metal Machine Music…
We bring everything back to the question: how do you define music? We do this by taking audiences through a timeline of music by local artists collaborating to create a community that is atypical for the Berlin scene.
Introduction – Metal Machine Music: Chapter one
When asked “What is electronic music?”, many people instinctively respond with something like: “Oh yeah, club music, DJs, techno.” And while that’s not exactly wrong, it can feel reductive—especially when considering the vast scope this term actually covers.
“Electronic music” is an enormous umbrella, under which countless subgenres have emerged and evolved. From early avant-garde experiments to contemporary club sounds, this broad category spans a rich and complex history of innovation, technology, and expression.
In this second edition of Metal Machine Music, we aim to trace a historical and stylistic line through a curated series of live performances. By focusing on specific subgenres, we hope to offer a clearer picture of how electronic music has developed over time—how it has shaped, and been shaped by, both its tools and its audiences.
What is electronic music?
By definition, it is a form of music that primarily involves the use of electronic instruments, digital technology, and computer-based systems in its creation, production, and performance. Unlike traditional acoustic music, it often employs synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, and digital audio workstations (DAWs) to generate and manipulate sound in ways that transcend conventional boundaries.
It began in the early 20th century as an experimental art form driven by new technologies, and over time, it evolved in a vast and diverse landscape.
Four distinct live performances, each embodying a specific era and aesthetic shift in the genre’s development.
