"Antisemitismus und Verschwörungserzählungen in türkischen TV-Dramen"

In the organizer's words:

Lecture by Aysel Özdilek

Anti-Semitism is a serious problem in the present. This could not be overlooked in the recent past. Even before the attack in Halle in 2019, Jews were attacked on the streets, new right-wing movements and parties are calling for an end to the "dictatorship of memory" and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories are becoming more and more widespread. This series of events deals with the current manifestations of hostility towards Jews in various political, ideological and religious milieus and at the same time presents initiatives and ways of taking action to combat anti-Semitism in the 21st century.

A series of events organized by the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Hamburg in cooperation with Hamburg vernetzt gegen Rechts - Koordinierungsstelle des Beratungsnetzwerks gegen Rechtsextremismus Hamburg and the Gesellschaft für christlich-jüdische Zusammenarbeit in Hamburg e. V.

"Anti-Semitism and conspiracy narratives in Turkish TV dramas"

Anti-Semitism and anti-Semitic conspiracy narratives are present in various political and social contexts in Turkey and are spread particularly via media formats. The nationally and internationally successful, popular Turkish primetime television dramas play a particularly important role here, as they make historical and geopolitical interpretations accessible to a wider audience.

The lecture examines how such patterns of interpretation are taken up and transformed in Turkish television series. Using the example of the historical drama Payitaht: Abdülhamid (2027-2021), for example, explicit anti-Semitic representations can be identified. At the same time, it is shown that corresponding narratives in current primetime television dramas are often not openly articulated, but appear in the form of narrative encodings or geopolitical conflict stagings.

The article analyzes these different manifestations and asks how anti-Semitic patterns of interpretation are embedded in serial narratives and what functions they assume within these narratives.

Aysel Özdilek studied Turkish Studies, Educational Science and Protestant Theology at the University of Hamburg, where she graduated in 2015. She is currently doing her doctorate at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz on aesthetics, trends and discourses of Turkish television series culture between 2005-2021. As a media researcher, she deals with audiovisual and digital media cultures in transcultural contexts, especially in the field of Turkish television and popular culture.
