"Mediale Berichterstattung und Antisemitismus seit dem 7. Oktober 2023"

In the organizer's words:

Lecture by Esther Schapira

Anti-Semitism is a serious problem in the present day. This could not be overlooked in the recent past. Even before the attack in Halle in 2019, Jews were attacked on the streets, new right-wing movements and parties are calling for an end to the "dictatorship of memory" and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories are becoming more and more widespread. The series of events deals with the current manifestations of hostility towards Jews in various political, ideological and religious milieus and at the same time presents initiatives and ways of taking action to combat anti-Semitism in the 21st century.

"Media coverage and anti-Semitism since October 7, 2023"

The war between Hamas and Israel is also an unprecedented war for the sovereignty of political interpretation. The media are at the forefront of this. Reporting in Germany has also contributed to shifting red lines and making the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023 appear as resistance to supposed colonialism. The media allowed itself to be instrumentalized to an unprecedented extent and negligently spread Hamas propaganda. Not only Israelis have been marginalized, regardless of their respective convictions. The hatred is now endangering Jewish lives worldwide. The lecture will use selected examples to show how the dramatic events since October 7, 2023 have been portrayed in the media and how this reporting shapes our perception, far beyond the Middle East.

Esther Schapira is a book author and writes for various print and online media, including the Jüdische Allgemeine Zeitung. Until 2021, she was head of the "Television/Politics" department at Hessischer Rundfunk and regularly commented on the "Tagesthemen" program. Several of her television documentaries have won awards, for example "The Child, Death and the Truth - Who Shot Mohammed Al Durah?". Together with Georg M. Hafner, she has been awarded the Buber-Rosenzweig Medal.
