Im April laden wir herzlich ein zu den Filmen von Els van Riel.

Die Filme von Els van Riel versuchen nicht, zu erzählen. Im Zentrum stehen Licht, Zeit, Bewegung und die filmische Technik. Els van Riel schaut … sie schaut genau hin. Aber sie lässt auch das Publikum Teil dieses Prozesses sein. Sie beschreibt ihre Filmpraxis als „radikale Aufmerksamkeit“. Wenn man einem noch so gewöhnlichen Ding genug Zeit schenkt, entdeckt man es neu. Deswegen sind Filme sowohl als geduldige Recherchen als auch als Kreationen zu verstehen. Für Els van Riel gibt die Filmkamera nicht einfach die Realität wieder, sondern sie gestaltet sie mit. So entsteht aus einem weißen, überbelichteten Bild etwas Benennbares, wenn die Filmemacherin langsam die Blende schließt. Oft sind es gerade die Lichtverhältnisse, die unsere Umgebung in einem poetischen, (a)signifikanten Dasein erscheinen lassen. Els van Riel bewegt sich gerne an dieser Schwelle.

This April, we warmly invite you to come and see Els van Riel’s films.

Els van Riel’s films do not attempt to tell a story. The focus is on light, time, movement and cinematic technique. Els van Riel is an observer; she observes closely. However, she also allows the audience to participate in this process. She describes her filmmaking approach as “radical attention”. If you give even the most ordinary thing enough time, you rediscover it. This is why films should be understood as both patient research and creations. For Els van Riel, the film camera does not merely reflect reality; it helps to shape it. Thus, a white, overexposed image becomes definable as the filmmaker slowly closes the aperture. It is often the lighting conditions themselves that cause our surroundings to take on a poetic, (a)significant existence. Els van Riel likes to move along this threshold.
