Book readings, literature, poetry slam, lectures, stand up comedy, talks and reports in Berlin

Sometimes it's not enough to see something. Sometimes you want to hear something. A thought that slowly unfolds. A voice that fills a room. A sentence that you will remember, even though you didn't intend to take anything with you. Berlin is a city that has an incredible amount to say, literally. The scene for spoken word, readings, spoken word, poetry slam, lectures and panel discussions is more vibrant here than almost anywhere else, and the best thing about it: you don't need to have studied literature to feel welcome. Poetry slam is almost a national sport in Berlin, and that is by no means an exaggeration. The Kiezpoeten regularly perform at slam events and spoken word evenings in over ten districts, from Prenzlauer Berg to Neukölln, proving that good texts don't need a big stage to make an impact. If you're looking for something a little bigger, the Admiralspalast offers a real slam gala with its regular Champions Slam, where spoken word meets one of the city's most beautiful stages and the audience decides who wins the night. Those who have been around for a while and are familiar with the scene will also know that the Slam des Westens at the AHA Berlin has been a reliable address for poetry slams with a real neighborhood character every two months since 2010. But spoken word in Berlin is more than just slam. It's also a reading in the back room of a bookshop, where an author presents her new novel and then spends an hour discussing it with the audience. It is the lecture in the silent green Kulturquartier in Wedding, a former crematorium that is now one of the most exciting venues in the city and regularly hosts readings, symposia and discussion formats that engage the mind as much as the heart. It's the panel discussion where you realize that you actually had a completely different opinion and now you're no longer sure. Berlin has a distinct culture of discussion that is equally at home in universities, independent cultural centers and small clubs. If you're looking for events where thinking is explicitly part of the evening, this is definitely the place to be. And then there are the open microphone evenings, the open mics, where people step onto a stage with a piece of paper in their hand and say something that is important to them: sometimes raw, sometimes polished, sometimes both. That's the beauty of spoken word culture in Berlin: it has no fixed form. It adapts, reinvents itself and surprises you every time. Take a look at our calendar of events, pick an evening of spoken word and just listen. It's worth it.
