In general, Peter Tchaikovsky was a doubter from the bottom of his soul - in relation to himself. Time and again, he considered himself not creative enough and feared that he did not meet his own standards or those of others. His 5th Symphony was also written in the shadow of merciless self-criticism and all kinds of agonizing questions about life. Wasn't the new work a failure after all, a total misstep? The rather mediocre success of the premiere in 1888 only strengthened the composer's resolve. It was only after a triumphantly celebrated performance in Hamburg the following year that Tchaikovsky reconciled himself to his Fifth, which is now one of the most popular works in the Romantic repertoire. This is probably also because the symphony deals with a theme that concerns each and every one of us directly: fate in all its unpredictability. This is why the work is nicknamed the "Symphony of Fate". And indeed, the audience experiences a rollercoaster ride between piercing restlessness, exhilarated exuberance and deep resignation.

Edvard Grieg's only piano concerto is the pianistic tour de force of a 25-year-old exuberant with joie de vivre. A bravura piece that made Grieg world-famous in one fell swoop and is still part of the standard luggage of all great pianists today. The young piano star Eric Lu gazes into the clear light of the north and strolls relaxed between peaks and fjords. Grieg's compatriot Eivind Groven's homage to the sublime nature of Norway provides material for the finest of head cinema, directed by the young Norwegian conductor Julie Røssland. The Gürzenich Orchestra's benefit concert will be held in aid of the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger's "wir helfen" initiative.
