Ausstellung: Amazônia Indigene Welten
In the organizer's words:
Amazonia is both famous and unknown at the same time. Even though the first contacts were made five centuries ago, Europeans see it as a place full of secrets. The blurred and oversimplified image of a gigantic jungle, populated by "Indians" who live there out of time, reduces this vast region in the collective imagination to a frozen exotic backdrop that has been shaped over the centuries by the representations of outsiders.
The exhibition Amazônia. Indigenous Worlds has set itself the ambitious goal of presenting this region and its inhabitants through the eyes and viewpoints of its first inhabitants, the indigenous people. It is a multi-layered, ever-evolving place where social and ecological dynamics are constantly coming together.
The vast territory of Amazonia is a living whole of dense networks, intercultural exchange and expanded sociability.
We would like to present Amazonia less as a natural habitat and more as a cultural space: a place where human and non-human inhabitants, different social classes and scenes, tradition and modernity, and the most diverse local and global political challenges confront and intertwine.
Just as the rivers of Amazonia overflow their banks and change the landscape, this exhibition invites us to step beyond the (geographical, social, ontological) boundaries that limit our view of Amazonia, to grasp the complexity of this region and dismantle exotic notions.
By approaching indigenous perspectives, the exhibition presents an alternative way of understanding the world, interacting collectively and cultivating relationships with our environment.

Free admission All visitors up to and including the age of 18 have free admission to the exhibitions at the Bundeskunsthalle on all days. Proof must be presented at the ticket desk.
