Brigitte Meier-Denninghoff (1923-2011) was one of the most successful sculptors of the post-war period and not only in demand in Germany. She exhibited her innovative metal sculptures in the 1950s and 1960s at the documenta in Kassel, the Venice Biennale and the World's Fair in New York, among others. The young artist received important prizes and her works were included in groundbreaking art publications.
Today, the sculptor is primarily recognized as part of the Matschinsky-Denninghoff duo, which she founded in 1970 with her husband Martin Matschinsky (1921-2020). The two artists' large metal sculptures still accentuate public spaces in Berlin today, for example on the central reservation of Tauentzienstraße or in front of the Berlinische Galerie. With the formation of the duo, the couple retroactively declared Brigitte Meier-Denninghoff's earlier sculptural work to be a joint work. From then on, the artist's works were only exhibited under the joint name Matschinsky-Denninghoff. Brigitte Meier-Denninghoff disappeared from art history.
Her sculptures, which she signed "Brigitte Meier-Denninghoff" until the duo was founded, are once again being recognized as an independent position of modernism after more than 50 years. The couple's documentary and artistic estate was analyzed for the show. Since 2021, it has been managed by the Matschinsky-Denninghoff Foundation under the umbrella of the Berlinische Galerie in collaboration with VAN HAM Art Estate.
