What is it like to be a woman in a country characterized by patriarchal structures, religious control and deeply rooted traditions? "Voices from the Silence" brings together atmospheric short biographies of Mauritanian women who, despite the dangers, were prepared to speak openly about the impact of social norms and religious regulations on their lives. Their stories deal with personal experiences of discrimination and repression - but also with a thirst for knowledge, curiosity, protest, love, escape and change. Compiled by Yahya Ekhou, a Mauritanian author and human rights activist in exile, they provide an insight into realities that are hardly known outside the country.
