What is natural - and who actually determines that? In "Diversity", biologist Nathan H. Lents dispels the myth that only heterosexuality and binary gender models correspond to the laws of evolution. Instead, he takes a well-founded, global and surprisingly diverse look at the animal and human kingdoms and shows how fluid sexuality and gender have always been.

Whether gay swans, bisexual bonobos or clownfish that change sex: Lents brings together impressive biological findings and contrasts them with deeply rooted social prejudices. His conclusion: what we think is the exception is much more often the rule.

Nathan H. Lents is Professor of Biology at John Jay College in New York, researches genetics, cell biology and human behavior, among other things, and writes regularly for media outlets such as The Guardian and The Observer. "Diversity" is his first book to be published in German - a fact-filled and liberating plea for a new understanding of nature.
