Cardinals: The "next great guitar band from Ireland" is coming to Germany in November

Guitar music from Ireland has had a very good reputation again for a few years now, mainly thanks to the post-punk wave around acts such as Fontaines D.C. and The Murder Capital. The Cardinals from Cork are also working on this, although they tend to take Britpop, New York Strokes coolness, Yo La Tengo melancholy and The Pogues swagger as stylistic and musical references. The Cardinals' first, self-titled EP in 2024 was already a hit with the music press: Rolling Stone called them "the next great guitar band from Ireland", the NME said they would write the classics of the future. The six songs on the EP are indeed of high quality: the opener "Twist and Turn" begins as a murmured ballad and breaks out into Britpop pathos. "Roseland" shows the band's Pogues swagger, "Nineteen" is a straightforward rock song and "If I Could Make You Care" grows from a melancholy ballad into a loud rock song. "Big Empty Heart" lets nasty and beautiful guitars wrestle with Eaun Manning's charismatic voice and Irish folk elements.

In November, you have the chance to see the Cardinals live in Germany. Which should be spectacular, as the band from Cork has earned its merits in the Irish DIY scene with numerous rousing gigs. As Manning said in an interview: "We've played in places where others would never have thought of putting on a concert." This is different on the German tour, however: they are playing at the Kantine am Berghain in Berlin and the legendary Ratinger Hof in Düsseldorf.
