On the occasion of Berlin Art Week, Galerie Thomas Schulte is presenting the first solo exhibition of new paintings by Dan Walsh, in which he continues his meditative exploration of abstraction. With Assembly, Walsh expands his minimalist vocabulary to include subtly irregular forms, shifting lines and a characteristically subtle sense of humor. Each of the seven works in the exhibition begins with a strictly structured grid, which Walsh transforms into a complex visual system using a reduced selection of formal elements. Through the repetition and variation of simple geometric shapes, he constructs linear patterns and visual rhythms that unfold across the canvas. Upon closer inspection, these patterns reveal the artist's free and layered brushwork, resulting in a nuanced transparency and added complexity. As Walsh himself says, he is a "maximalist working within a minimalist paradigm", striving for maximum visual resonance with minimal means.
