On the fifth anniversary of the Hanau racist attack, this stark, black-and-white documentary by Marcin Wierzchowski holds up a mirror to German society. The film follows the families of the nine victims who were murdered by a far-right extremist through four years of grief, bureaucratic neglect, and their resilient fight for justice and recognition. With intimate access and restrained observation, Wierzchowski exposes the chilling mechanics of systemic racism and institutional failure, while the families' powerful testimonies dismantle narrow definitions of identity and belonging. A harrowing yet essential portrait of a community's loss and its unwavering demand for equality that asks: Who are the German people? (BH)
