INLAND EMPIRE, Lynch's last feature film and thus our retrospective, also offers a fitting conclusion because it turns filmmaking itself into an occasion for Lynchian explorations of the surreal. Even more than in MULHOLLAND DRIVE, the focus here is on an actress who begins to take on the persona of her role in a film. Her world and the world of the movie increasingly blur into an uncanny dream. INLAND EMPIRE also forms a fitting circular conclusion, as Lynch returns to his experimental, low-budget origins while always remaining innovative - not least by shooting with early digital camcorders.
