Orient Express - An adventure
With the kind support of www.unterwegs.biz we present the WELTENBUMMLER series. This time with DENNIS GASTMANN.
Dennis Gastmann explores Europe - on the tracks of the Orient Express from Paris to Istanbul: 5,000 kilometers, seventeen cities and numerous detours between ancient splendor and the sober present. Sometimes by express train, sometimes by slow train, sometimes by bus through the villages when the tracks end.
In the best manner of literary reportage, he finds himself in the glare of Paris Fashion Week, lives with a nonna who cooks for him like her own son, and learns from a gondoliera how to understand the city on the water. Gastmann pets the lions of an oligarch from the Little Carpathians - and is almost fed to the tigers. He bathes in fire, fog and laser light in the world's largest noodle soup, as the Hungarians joke, and meets a flower girl in the middle of a mountain of garbage in a Bulgarian slum. A portrait of a continent in transition - wild, intense and full-bodied.
Dennis Gastmann, born in 1978, is a writer, filmmaker and border crosser. As a reporter for the ARD foreign news magazine, he has traveled to all continents, met sorcerers and saints, billionaires, mafiosi and the Ku Klux Klan (Around the World with 80,000 Questions). His reportages have won several awards and have been nominated for the Grimme Prize three times. As an author, he has walked across the Alps (Gang nach Canossa), explored the global jet set (Geschlossene Gesellschaft) and the last hidden places on earth (Atlas der unentdeckten Länder). Gastmann lives in Hamburg, his office is the world.
