A provincial town: corruption as far as the eye can see, everyone is lining their own pockets - according to the good old motto: "Your friends' friends are my friends too". It's just too bad that trouble is looming from the tax office. The rumor that an auditor is coming to inspect the business spreads fear and terror. When a young man called Khlestakov turns up, whom nobody knows and who behaves very differently from what they are used to here, everyone agrees: this must be the dreaded auditor.
Almost 200 years after its premiere, Gogol's famous comedy from 1836 has lost none of its comedy and topicality. If you look at the favoritism of authoritarian governments, but also at tax evasion as a global phenomenon, then not too much has changed.
