The national team's jerseys through the ages

To mark the World Cup, the German Sport & Olympia Museum is hosting a special exhibition from May 19 to August 23, 2026.

How does a sports jersey become a piece of German soccer history - and a fabric that carries memories?
Long a classic in black and white, the national team's outfits have been developed just as carefully as the tactics on the pitch since the mid-1980s. Changing cuts, materials, color schemes and the placement of emblems and logos reflect the trends of their time and provide the templates for big and small stories on and off the pitch. So jerseys have long been more than just sportswear: they are a projection surface, cult objects, bestsellers and coveted collector's items.
In our exhibition to mark the Football World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, we are presenting a selection of historic jerseys, some of them "matchworn", from the impressive and valuable collection of Andreas Schallenmüller and thus a subtle soccer story of its own kind.
Because dreams and nightmares are made from the "fabric of the nation". A closet full of memories and emotions - from goosebumps to tears in the buttonhole.

A visit to the exhibition is included in the admission price.
