The exhibition Diaspora Wonderland. Fashioning Worlds at the ifa Gallery Berlin sheds light on diasporic experiences and identities in the context of fashion. It explores how fashion as a narrative medium marks belonging, forms identity and creates community.
Fashion is a creative act through which we show the world who we are - what we wear on our skin reveals our intimate relationship to our bodies and to the time in which we live.
Diaspora Wonderland understands fashion as a cultural seismograph that reflects and anticipates changes in identity, gender, sensuality, origin and imagination. The exhibition brings together artists and designers working with textiles, sound, photography and sculptural garments, and presents fashion as a space of mediation and storytelling. It highlights diasporic experiences and identities as constitutive forces of new "wonderlands" shaped by collective memory and movement. The circulation of craftsmanship, aesthetics and knowledge within diasporic communities will be made visible while promoting exchange with the Berlin fashion scene and creative industries.
