Gaël was only five years old when his mother died of AIDS. Her death was soon overshadowed by the devastating civil wars and genocides in Burundi and Rwanda. As a result, Gaël - like many other Rwandans - was forced to go into exile.

Thirty years later, he dares to confront his family history, which is also the fateful story of an entire generation of Rwandan women. He sets out in search of those who knew and loved his mother Didy and at the same time shaped him in their own way. Based on the memories of Didy's three sisters and other women who knew her well, the picture of a strong, fearless and independent woman unfolds.

GAËL KAMILINDI (*1986 in the Democratic Republic of Congo) grew up in Switzerland and graduated from the Conservatoire National d'Art Dramatique in Paris in 2011. He has worked with directors such as Bob Wilson, Jean-Pierre Vincent, Krzysztof Warlikowski, Mélanie Laurent and Denis Podalydès. He has been a member of the Comédie-Française since 2017. In film and television, he has worked with Mona Achache, Philippe Garrel, Pierre Aknine and Catherine Corsini, among others. Gaël Kamilindi made DIDY, his first feature-length documentary, in collaboration with filmmaker François-Xavier Destors.

FRANÇOIS-XAVIER DESTORS (*1986 in Paris) is a French filmmaker whose work deals with the invisibility of mass crimes and questions of remembrance. His first film was RWANDA (2014), followed by MELTING SOULS (2018), MADELA, BEYOND THE MYTH (2019) and THIAROYE 44 (2022).
