The Eisenbahnstraße over the last 500 years: A historical tour of the district

Eisenbahnstraße in the east of Leipzig is notorious as a place of crime, danger and deviation from the bourgeois norm. A look at the history of the Magistrale and the surrounding districts of Neustadt-Neuschönefeld and Volkmarsdorf shows that for centuries it has been an area of outsiders and outcasts, of losers and the disadvantaged, but also of those who think differently, of fighters and resisters, of those who don't belong and those who don't want to belong.

On this tour you will learn
- what Prince of Poets Goethe and Emperor Napoleon had to do here;
- how the first German long-distance railroad cut through a former red-light district made up of blackberry hedges;
- how the bourgeois women's movement of the 19th century was promoted here, as well as homeopathy and the interpretation of manuscripts;
- how communists and labor leaders shaped the "Red East" of Leipzig;
- how Lene Voigt came up with the idea of rewriting classical poems in Saxon here;
- why the forgotten creator of the "Feuerzangenbowle", who grew up here, was forgotten;
- what is being done here to remember drug deaths and their human dignity;
- that without East Leipzig there would have been neither the Diercke World Atlas nor the Peaceful Revolution of 1989...

Dr. Uwe Krüger from the Neustädter Markt citizens' association will lead the tour.
Start is in front of the Aldi supermarket at Konradstraße 27.
The walk ends at Volkmarsdorfer Markt (on Google Maps: Ernst-Thälmann-Platz).
The number of participants is limited to 20 people per tour. Registration is therefore required.
Please register by email at kontakt@poege-haus.de. You will then receive a confirmation of registration and the bank details or Paypal account for transferring the participation fee. This is 6-10 euros per person (according to self-assessment).

The tours are funded by the district budget of the Leipzig East District Council.
