Neustadt-Frauen: Ein feministisch-historischer Stadtteilrundgang

In the organizer's words:

We walk through the neighborhood around the front part of Eisenbahnstraße and remember the struggles and courage, but also the fate and suffering of women who lived or worked in the district on the eve of March 8. Among other things, we talk about ...

• the "Rabet whores", who were forced to sell their bodies to students at Leipzig University in the 16th century, persecuted by patriarchal authorities and belittled by male historians and encyclopaedists for centuries to come;
  
• the co-founder of the bourgeois women's movement Louise Otto-Peters, who led the General German Women's Association from Kreuzstraße and co-published its newspaper "Neue Bahnen";
  
• Rosa Luxemburg, who wrote against militarism, war and social inequality in the then radical Marxist "Leipziger Volkszeitung" (based in today's Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße);
  
• the dialect poet and humor writer Lene Voigt, who as a child in Ludwigstraße was inspired to write her later rewritings of classical poems in Saxon - which were then banned by the Nazis;
• the painter Ilske Schwimmer from Eisenbahnstraße, who developed from the muse, lover and housekeeper of a well-known painter, who demanded her unconditional submission, into a recognized artist with her own style;

the GDR civil rights activist Katrin Hattenhauer, who contributed significantly to the growth of the Monday demonstrations in 1989 with courageous actions from Mariannenstraße;
Dr. Christa Schmidt from Eisenbahnstraße, who worked towards a progressive abortion law in reunified Germany in 1990 as Minister for Family and Women in the last GDR government ...

The tour will be led by Dr. Uwe Krüger from the Neustädter Markt citizens' association.

Start is at Friedrich-List-Platz, streetcar stop out of town (so if you come by streetcar from the main station and get off at List-Platz, you've come to the right place).
The end is at Neustädter Markt.

The number of participants is limited to 20 people. Registration is therefore required.
