Digitale Nachhaltigkeit: Laptops mit Open Source upcyclen

The most sustainable device is the one you already own!

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10, forcing many users to replace their devices. This will cost us - and the environment - dearly, as millions of functioning devices will end up as electronic waste. That's why the"End of 10" campaign is helping to upgrade old devices with open source software so that they can continue to be used.

Find out in our free workshop with Joseph De Veaugh-Geiss(KDE) how you can give your old laptop (PC or Mac!) a new lease of life, save money and reduce toxic electronic waste with free, open source software. Bring your curiosity and your questions - or a laptop that you would like to upcycle with GNU/Linux. The workshop is explicitly intended for beginners, technical knowledge is not required!

We'll start with a meet & greet and a discussion round to explore how Free Software can support literary institutions and the free literary scene, how we can promote digital self-determination and help the environment together. Then we move on to the practical part: Older Macs or PCs that are no longer supported by the manufacturers can be upgraded with the Linux operating system to keep them working for many years to come. You are welcome to simply watch, or get started right away with instructions. Don't worry - you don't have to change everything completely, but can use both operating systems temporarily with a "dual boot", for example.

IMPORTANT: Back up any existing data on the device you want to upcycle to an external storage medium or the cloud before the event!

If you would like to take part in the practical workshop, it is helpful to register in advance by e-mail to magda.birkmann [at] lettretage.de in order to clarify some technical questions. Spontaneous participation is also possible!
