Francesca Remigi - The Empowered Drums
The Empowered Drums is an extended drum kit designed to expand the sonic and performative possibilities of contemporary drumming. By attaching transducers to the resonant heads of each drum, the instrument becomes both a generator and amplifier of its own sound. This setup allows the acoustic vibrations of the drums to be fed back into the instrument, creating a hybrid system in which resonance, amplification and electronic processing merge into a single, constantly changing sound source. Beyond pure amplification, the use of exciters allows the controlled generation of acoustic-electronic feedback, transforming the drums into an instrument capable of producing sustained tones, drones and complex textures. These sounds are processed in real time using Max/MSP and Super, allowing the performer to create long, open-form soundscapes that challenge the traditional percussive identity of the drum kit. The result is a dynamic interplay between performer, instrument and system, in which improvisation does not arise solely from the striking of playing surfaces, but from listening, modulating and negotiating with feedback.
The Empowered Drums, developed as part of Francesca Remigi's PhD research project, also proposes a new conceptual framework for percussion practice. The expanded drum kit is positioned as an emancipated instrument - freed from the anthropological and gender-specific attributions historically associated with jazz percussion culture. In this project, the solo female drummer becomes a self-determined performer whose artistic identity develops through experimentation, self-generated soundscapes and an expanded relationship with the instrument. The work ultimately invites us to rethink what a percussion instrument can be and how a percussionist can live her sonic and artistic agency.
strauchmayr - sound color in black on white
strauchmayr are Johanna Mayr (bassoon) and Charlotte Strauch (bass clarinet, clarinet). The two met while studying at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and are now based in Leipzig, Frankfurt and Vienna, working primarily in the field of contemporary and improvised music.
In their program "Klangfarbe in schwarz auf weiß" they dedicate themselves to graphically notated works, which will also be projected onto a screen during the concert. With intuition, friendship and extended techniques in their luggage, strauchmayr take the audience on a journey that invites them to make their own associations between music and graphics.
