10 years after the Paris Climate Agreement, global CO2 emissions are still not falling. Why? And are there any rays of hope? A taz talk with climate veteran and State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth.
When almost all countries in the world adopted the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, it was considered a breakthrough. Among the negotiators was Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary at the Ministry of the Environment. Flasbarth is still (despite a brief interruption) State Secretary at the Ministry of the Environment and CO2 emissions continue to rise.
The USA has once again pulled out of the Paris Agreement and wants to force other countries to do less climate protection, while the CDU is putting the brakes on climate protection measures in the EU and Germany. At the same time, emissions in China, the world's biggest polluter, are beginning to fall and there are also signs of a boom in renewables in India and Africa. Looking back, was Paris a success or a failure? Is the 1.5 degree target dead? How do we deal with China saving the world? And is a new era of climate protection dawning?
