Numerous documents from ancient Egypt have come down to us on papyri. These include marriage contracts, but also divorce certificates. We will take a look at the texts and reconstruct how the conclusion and dissolution of marriage was legally organized. We will also take a look at the demographics: who got married, when, how often, why and for how long? What conflicts existed between the spouses and their families? And did the wedding represent a confession before the gods? And finally, what was the procedure for divorce?

The lecture by PD Dr. Franziska Naether examines marriage, divorce and family life in ancient Egypt on the basis of papyri and demographic data and provides insights into ancient Egyptian festival and celebration culture.
