ENSEMBLE MODERN - WHY WE PLAY is the first feature-length documentary film about one of the world's leading ensembles for contemporary music. The film provides direct access to the work of the Ensemble Modern and accompanies the musicians not only on stage, but above all in rehearsals - where music is created. In concentrated work processes, it becomes audible how a common musical language is formed: through searching, discarding and approaching again...Every year, the Ensemble Modern works on around 70 pieces, constantly pushing the boundaries of what is audible. ENSEMBLE MODERN - WHY WE PLAY shows music not only as a performance, but as a process - and as a joint search for expression in our time.
