Fay van Baar / Kossi S. Aholou-Wokawui: Where We Stand / Ezan Kélé

In the organizer's words:

About the event

Dance

With OCN, Dutch choreographer Fay van Baar looks at key moments in social cohesion and our desire for solidarity. What favors or hinders the decision to help strangers? OCN is also showing a work from the repertoire of Kossi S. Aholou-Wokawui. "Ezan Kélé" describes dawn as a half-awake state in which the subconscious of the night, hidden in the pale semi-darkness, threatens to tip over into the real.

About the artists

Fay van Baar was a dancer at the Netherlands Dance Theatre in The Hague for many years and previously realized her first choreographic works for the NDT, Mir Tanzgala and Korzo Den Haag, among others. She was awarded the Dansersfonds prize for her "mature, unforced performance, subtle musicality and clear affinity with the atmosphere and energy that a choreography wants to evoke". Just like OCN, Fay van Baar is interested in issues that fester in society but are not easy to grasp or put into words. "I have always been drawn to storytelling, be it through writing, drawing, film, music, theater or dance. It has the power to connect people and help us navigate complex social realities, emotions and identities." (Fay van Baar)

Kossi Sebastien Aholou-Wokawui grew up in Togo and studied traditional and contemporary African dance as well as modern and jazz dance in various ensembles. He completed further training with Stephanie Thiersch and at the École des Sables, Senegal, among others, and worked as a workshop leader at the Théâtre National d'Haïti. Aholou-Wokawui has been working continuously with steptext dance project since 2012 and has since danced in numerous productions by Helge Letonja, including Of Curious Nature in Germany and abroad since 2019. His choreographic works include Dans La Peau de l'autre together with Tom Bünger, several solos including Be-Greifen, as well as Ezan-Kélé with the ensemble Of Curious Nature 2023. His works combine the dance language he developed in Togo with contemporary European dance, which he has been practicing for years, to create new and fresh interweavings. In various collaborations, Aholou-Wokawui also leads workshops in Contemporary Afro and designs transcultural youth dance theater projects.
