About the performance:

Cuba and life in the diaspora, family, haunting, lesbianism and longing as an outlet for grief: "THIS IS A LOVESTORY" plays with the boundary between truth and exaggeration. Soroa Lear tells stories of deceased grandmothers, crumbling countries and of César, a boy, a dancer, the ultimate romantic obsession ... With an absurd crush as its starting point, "THIS IS A LOVE STORY" invites you on a hilarious and heartbreaking journey through longing, grief and the complexity of Latinidad.

About the artists:

Soroa Lear (she/her) is a queer Cuban-American dancer, performer and writer based in Berlin. She graduated from Reed College with a degree in Dance and Comparative Literature, which sparked her interest in the intersection of movement and critical theory. She sees performance as a way to break hearts and make people laugh, creating a connection between the dramatic and the subtle, the ugly and the beautiful. She has worked for the Staatsoper Berlin, Deva Schubert, Rebecca Howell, Aru Ray Tormann, Wojciech Kosma and Sebastian Abarbanell, among others, and has performed at venues such as the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, the Berlinische Galerie, the Sophiensaele, the Schinkel-Pavillon, the Ballhaus Ost, the Uferstudios Berlin and in many nightclubs with numerous drag queens. In addition to her performance work, she teaches at the Tanzfabrik Berlin. Her texts have been published by Penny Press and in the Confluence Journal.

Aru Ray Tormann

Aru Ray Tormann is a trans* choreographer, dance dramaturge and curator. Aru's work focuses on care as a framework and method for art-making and participatory practices within and beyond performing arts institutions. With a background in political philosophy and choreography, Aru's practice operates at the intersection of artistic and theoretical research and has been supported by numerous grants and residencies in Germany and internationally. As a dramaturg, Aru collaborates with solo artists and collectives and co-curates residency programs, conferences and collective labs. Aru has collaborated with institutions such as Gropius Bau, PACT Zollverein, Schauspiel Frankfurt, International Theatre Institute, Uferstudios Berlin, Tafelhalle Nürnberg and TATWERK | performative Forschung and has held teaching positions at Iceland University of the Arts and Akademie der Künste Baden-Württemberg. Aru is co-founder of LIK, a collective for dramaturgy, curation and coordination, and Celestial Bodies, a mobile platform for artistic research, collaboration and exchange in the performing arts.
