UNDER THE VOLCANO is one of 7 entries in the competition of the 20th edition of filmPOLSKA, which takes place from September 10 to 17 in Berlin and Potsdam. Damian Kocur is on site for a Q&A.

A patchwork family from the Ukrainian capital Kyiv goes on vacation to Tenerife. Shortly before their journey home, they receive the news that there is a war at home and their flight has been canceled. At first glance, the family is stranded in paradise. They are even allowed to stay in the hotel free of charge. But no one can go on a happy vacation when their hometown is being bombed and relatives and friends are on a train to the West or in a bunker. What will happen next? Why is nobody here interested in what is happening in Eastern Europe? Should they go home or stay?

The parents repeatedly argue about these questions and all sorts of little things. Meanwhile, the 15-year-old daughter increasingly isolates herself and goes her own way. The dormant volcano Pico del Teide towers above the scenery. On the one hand, it illustrates how far away from the horror the family (still) seems to be, and on the other, it symbolizes how much is bubbling under the surface with sun, beach and street parties.

As in his debut "Chleb i sól / Brot und Salz", Damian Kocur tells a story about people like you and me in a highly concentrated manner and with a documentary style in casual scenes without transitions, artificial lighting or elaborate effects, a story that gets under your skin through its everyday nature.
