An early baroque song cycle for two high voices and instrumental ensemble - masterfully set to music by Schütz pupil David Pohle and reinterpreted by the young Berlin ensemble e.g.baroque.
The Liebesgesänge by David Pohle (1624-1695) based on texts by Paul Fleming from 1650 are probably among the earliest works in German music history that deserve the name "song cycle". Fleming thematizes his tragic love for the two sisters Anna and Elsabe Niehus in the partly joking, partly elegiac texts. David Pohle, a pupil of Heinrich Schütz, set these odes congenially as duets for two trebles - today they would be called countertenors. Particular attention should be paid to the fact that in the partly strophic, partly cantata-like forms, the two singers are not only in dialogue with each other, but above all with the two violins, which symbolize the presence of the revered ladies, while the vocal parts express the inner conflict of the protagonist.
