Every year, the Lower Saxony Foundation honors a personality from the Lower Saxony art scene with an edition of the "Kunst der Gegenwart" book series. The books are a recognition and tribute to the artists, most of whom can look back on a remarkable career and an extensive body of work. Each artist is given the opportunity to design the monograph according to their own wishes. The respective new publications will be accompanied by an exhibition at the Sprengel Museum Hannover. 2026 Gabriela Jolowicz, born in 1978, has been selected for the established monograph series.
Born in Salzgitter, Gabriela Jolowicz is one of the most important voices in contemporary woodcuts in Germany. Her large-format black and white works transform banal everyday scenes into narratives full of humor and depth. She often refers to the history of the artistic woodcut itself and transforms historical models into contemporary images. With fine powers of observation, Jolowicz decelerates the visual overload of our time - and shows how the everyday unfolds its unexpected depth in the woodcut.
