On November 20, you will have the last chance to see the exhibition at the finissage. Through this diverse exhibition, we want to create visibility on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the occupation of Western Sahara, tell a story of resistance and invite you to engage with this forgotten conflict.
The evening begins with the Comic reading "Enough Waiting" with Fine (author of the comic). The comic is a comprehensive yet entertaining introduction/review of the background, history and current political situation of Western Sahara. The reading will be in German, whispered translation into English or Spanish is possible. Prints of the comics can be seen in the exhibition and you can get the comics on site.
Afterwards, Minetu Handi will talk about her childhood and youth in the refugee camps and about her activism with other Sahrawi women in the diaspora. The women from her association "Hijas de Sagia" (Link: TikTok) will also be on display in the exhibition. The information material on the political prisoners of Gdeim Izik, the largest Sahrawi protest camp, which was crushed in 2010, was compiled by her association "Hijas de Sagia" (link: TikTok). Minetu will speak in Spanish, followed by a translation into German.
Minetu will shed particular light on the role of women in the struggle for independence, some of whom are also portrayed in the exhibition with the series of drawings "Remarkable Sahrawi Women" by Gaëtan Pelatre. The portraits and biographies highlight the strength, determination and central role of Sahrawi women in the resistance.
Minetu & Fine are both also part of the Berlin-based group "La Jaima de Tiris", which has been promoting the culture and history of the Saharan people and supporting their struggle for liberation since 2020.
You can also expect a traditional Jaima and a Sahrawi tea ceremony.
