Gerhard Hoehme (1920-1989) is one of the most influential artists of European abstraction and Art Informel. His experimental work moves between painting and object: from 1957 onwards, he developed new sculptural-painterly forms from his early tachist-lyric paintings and abandoned the classic picture format. From the mid-1960s, he created spatial objects and installations with cords and plastic tubes that directly involve the space and the viewer. Hoehme saw his works as fields of energy; poetic titles refer to his affinity with literature and music.
As a politically aware artiste engagé, he dealt with history and myth. His teaching at the Düsseldorf Art Academy influenced numerous generations of artists.
The exhibition shows all of Hoehme's works on canvas and paper from the Ströher Collection and from the MKM Foundation's artist bequests, supplemented by works from the Gerhard and Margarete Hoehme Foundation. The accompanying catalog comprehensively documents the artist's entire oeuvre.
