Goethe's Götz is regarded as a symbol of a freedom fighter who opposes the conditions characterized by feudal and clerical despotism. In Alexander Eisenach's play, however, he is more of an angry citizen than an upright revolutionary. A man who only sees political decisions and laws as an attack on his personal freedom.
