Hip-hop, funk, soul, global beats and electronica: for the 15th anniversary of the two cult albums "Paradise For All" (Heavenly Sweetness) by Guts and "Running High" (Ninja Tune) by Poirier, the two are coming to the Gretchen for a club night.
Guts and Poirier have been musically connected for a long time, even if they are separated by the Atlantic. Guts lives in Spain, Poirier is at home in Canada. Both have focused most of their careers on building multicultural bridges and exploring and celebrating Afro-Atlantic cultures.
Guts, the French producer, DJ and former beatmaker for the legendary hip-hop band Alliance Ethnik, explores the sounds of tropical regions, particularly the Caribbean and Africa, with great intensity. In his DJ sets, he combines hip-hop, funk, soul, jazz, afrobeats and afrotropical to create a euphorically grooving journey around the world.
"Paradise for All" is his third album and still one of the most listened to in his discography. Musically, it moves between hip-hop, soul, funk and electronic elements. Guts skillfully combines samples and live instrumentation to create a groovy, relaxed atmosphere that is both powerful and extremely danceable.
In addition to his own productions, he also shares the best tracks from his DJ sets in his "Straight From The Decks" compilations. The following applies: absolutely recommended listening but you should definitely experience a set by Guts in a club, there is nothing better.
The DJ and producer Poirier combines tropical rhythms with urban electronica and effortlessly breaks down stylistic barriers. It is pointless trying to pick out the individual elements of dancehall beats, soca energy and electronic intensity, Poirier's creativity is too captivating and dance-oriented. His special ability to fuse seemingly incompatible genres has earned him worldwide collaborations with MCs and DJs from global hip-hop, grime, dancehall, booty bass and more. As a producer and DJ, he knows no boundaries - only one remains set: it has to have bass.
"Running High" is considered a central work in Poirier's discography. The album moves between dancehall, soca, bass music and electronic global beats. With his flair for powerful rhythms and cross-genre collaborations, Poirier combines digital production with Caribbean influences and vocal features. Of particular note are Warrior Queen on the reggaeton track "Bang Bang", the legendary British MC YT on the raw dancehall track "Let Them Hate" and Panama's MC Zulu on the sci-fi bashment track "Secret Gyal Pictures". All in all, an incredibly resonant mix that characterizes Poirier's style as a digital Caribbean fusion, absolutely club-ready, musically open, minimalist and at the same time extremely danceable.
Anyone who knows the pair knows the ease and musical joy with which they create their sets, sprawling and rich. The two are supported by Femdelic. The DJ, designer and dancer has been active for 20 years and specializes in everything to do with funk and boogie. Her cross-genre sets are rhythmic, groovy and always full of soul.
