HANAMI tells the coming of age story of Nana, who was left behind by her mother Nia as a baby on a remote volcanic island. When Nana develops a high fever, she is sent to the foot of a volcano for treatment. There she encounters a world between dream and reality. Years later, when Nana is a teenager, Nia finally returns to the island. How will mother and daughter meet after so many years? Shot on the Cape Verdean island of Fogo, HANAMI provides an enchanting insight into this volcanic island - combined with a deeply moving story about longing and belonging.

DENISE FERNANDES was born in Lisbon in 1990. Born in Portugal with a Cape Verdean background, she studied film at CISA (Conservatorio Internazionale di Scienze Audiovisive), Lugano and Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV, Cuba. Her short films BREAD WITHOUT JAM (2012) and IDYLLIUM (2013) won several awards. HANAMI is her first feature film and was selected from 70 projects for the Solothurn Talent Lab 2016 and was awarded best first project by the Swiss Society of Authors (SSA).

The film celebrated its world premiere at the Concorso Cineasti del presente in Locarno in 2024 and has since been honored at numerous festivals - including most recently with the Roger Ebert Award at the Chicago Film Festival (2024), the "Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award" at the Gothenburg Film Festival (2025) and the MAX Award for Best Feature Film at the IndieLisboa International Film Festival (2025).
