Hannah Modigh – Dream Baby Dream

In the organizer's words:

Hannah Modigh is a Swedish photographer whose documentary, socially engaged and poetic photo series focus on themes such as growing up, origins, memory and time.

The vernissage of the exhibition "Hannah Modigh - Dream Baby Dream" will take place on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 6 to 10 pm in the presence of the photographer. We cordially invite you to talk to Hannah Modigh and take part in a curator's tour with Thomas Gust. Gain personal insights into the works and their backgrounds and celebrate the opening of the exhibition with us. We look forward to your visit!

Modigh develops her photographs from personal memories and diary entries, which manifest themselves in the form of long-term projects, book productions and exhibitions, for which she also develops photographic installations. Her photographs are a personal search for traces, a comparison with time and our lives. The theme of growing up can be found in almost all of the photographer's series, who often photographs with a tripod and always analog. In her landscapes and also in some of her portraits, the artist uses light and weather conditions as filters and abstractions to create picturesque, poetic moods.

The exhibition "Dream Baby Dream" at Galerie Buchkunst Berlin brings together photographs from all of the photographer's work groups. From her first long-term photographic series "Hillbilly Heroin Honey", which documented the difficult upbringing of a group of young people in the North American Appalachians, to the "Hurricane Seasons" in southern Louisiana, or the series "Delta", where she photographed the place of her own youth. For her current work "Searching for Sivagami", Hannah Modigh traveled to India to find her former nanny.

The photographer spent her childhood alternately in the countryside in southern Sweden and in India. She attended the Nordic School of Photography and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm.

Modigh's work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in Europe and the USA, including at the Deichtorhallen, Hamburg (2012); at the Landskrona Photo Festival, Sweden (2013); at the Münchner Stadtmuseum, Munich (2013); at the Sune Jonsson Centrum för Dokumentärfotografi, Umeå, Sweden (2018); DIPE (Dali International Photography Exhibition), Yunnan, China (2019); at the Gallery of Photography, Dublin (2020); at the House of Culture, Stockholm (2022) at Les Rencontres d'Arles, France (2023), Fotografiska Stockholm, Sweden (2025).

Her long-term project "Hillbilly Heroin, Honey" was awarded the Swedish Photo Book Prize in 2010. Her series also won the European Photo Exhibition Award in 2011, the Lars Tunbjörk Prize in Sweden in 2017 and the Lennart af Petersen Prize, also in Sweden, in 2018. The artist has been nominated for the Prix Pictet 2025 for her series "Hurricane Season". Her works can be found in collections such as the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Hannah Modigh has published nine photo books.
