The set of a drama about the 1993 Solingen arson attack, a real-life racist incident that killed five members of a Turkish family. Behind-the-scenes, the production starts to unravel under the weight of its own ambitions. When a burned Quran is discovered among the props the day's footage mysteriously vanishes and accusations start to fly.

At the center of the storm is Elif, the second assistant director, whose ambition clashes with her growing unease. As she scrambles to recover the lost tapes and salvage her career, she navigates a minefield of moral compromises, institutional hypocrisy, and hidden agendas. While the director claims political provocation as his right, the producer prioritizes profit over principles. Meanwhile, the predominantly Muslim film extras challenge the production’s exploitative gaze, questioning who such stories truly serve.

Hysteria is a razor-sharp blend of genre suspense and scorching social critique. Büyükatalay crafts a rip-roaring thriller that exposes the layers of racism, opportunism, and performative wokeness in the film industry, and beyond. (BH)

Am Set eines Dramas über den Brandanschlag von Solingen 1993, einem realen rassistischen Anschlags, bei dem fünf Mitglieder einer türkischen Familie ums Leben kamen. Hinter den Kulissen beginnt die Produktion unter dem Gewicht ihrer eigenen Ambitionen zu zerbrechen. Als unter den Requisiten ein verbranntes Koran-Exemplar entdeckt wird, verschwinden die Aufnahmen des Tages auf mysteriöse Weise und es kommt zu gegenseitigen Anschuldigungen.

Im Zentrum des Sturms steht Elif, die zweite Regieassistentin, deren Ehrgeiz mit ihrem wachsenden Unbehagen kollidiert. Während sie sich bemüht, die verlorenen Bänder wiederzufinden und ihre Karriere zu retten, bewegt sie sich auf einem Minenfeld aus moralischen Kompromissen, institutioneller Heuchelei und versteckten Absichten. Während der Regisseur politische Provokation als sein Recht beansprucht, stellt der Produzent Profit über Prinzipien. Unterdessen hinterfragen die überwiegend muslimischen Filmstatisten den ausbeuterischen Blick der Produktion und fragen sich, wem solche Geschichten wirklich dienen.

Hysteria ist eine messerscharfe Mischung aus Genre-Spannung und sengender Sozialkritik. Büyükatalay schafft einen rasanten Thriller, der die Schichten von Rassismus, Opportunismus und performativer Wokeness in der Filmindustrie und darüber hinaus aufdeckt. (BH)
