The shared interests of the IMAI and the Stadtverband der Gehörlosen Düsseldorf e.V., as well as the spatial connection between the Stadtverband and the Storage Museum, gave rise to the idea for this joint exhibition from the holdings of the two Düsseldorf collections. VALIE EXPORT's video work Sehtext: Fingergedicht from 1968/1973 from the IMAI archive was the first work we looked at together. In a variation of the two-handed finger alphabet, the artist freely spells out the philosopher Martin Heidegger: "I SAY THE SHOW WITH THE SIGNS IN THE SHOWING OF THE SAYING". Their signs, equally enigmatic for all participants, shaped and accompanied our exchange over the video. The work became the starting point for a joint reflection on meaning and interpretation, on understanding and misunderstanding, on forms, techniques and hierarchies of communication.
